Today, boys are dressed in suits or rompers and girls have choice among a long gown or a dress.  Designers and retail stores have introduced exclusive and couture range in baptismal attires. The variation is not only introduced in design and style but also in colors. Earlier only white was acceptable; modern attires are available in other pastel shades as well.

Traditionally, certain strict dressing and color codes were mandatory to follow while choosing a christening dress. Many churches did not allowed any other color exccept white. Now, other colors like peach, pink, mint green, pastel blue have become a fad. Christening designer outfits are available in vivid range of styles, designs and colors. Parents have more options to choose when planning a christening outfit for their baby. For girls, two types of styles are popular; foremost is a gown and the other is a dress. Generally, a gown is a cathedral length dress i.e.; it covers the feet of the baby whereas, dress is a shorter in length, it reaches just below the knee. In gowns, most popular is heirloom style, it is a traditional style gown which handmade and uses French style stitching. Heirloom gowns are considered extremely expensive because they involve intricate embroidery and rich brocade and other patterns. The choice of material is raw silk but many designers also use fine quality satin.

Apart from gowns, dresses are more modern version of traditional outfits. They are lighter since other materials like; cotton, georgette, shantung polyester is used in to make the dress. When choosing a baby christening outfit, it is very pivotal that the dress must be comfortable to wear and baby does not feel suffocated or constrained. The material must be soothing and should not cause any allergy since babies have very sensitive skin.
